During the general meeting of the “Royal Spas of Europe e.V.”, which recently took place on the occasion of the ITB on 10 March 2006 in the International Congress Center in Berlin, Germany, Rainer Mertel, Chairman of the “Royal Spas of Europe e.V.” welcomed Bayreuth, a city in Upper Franconia, Germany, as the newest member of the spa association.
The “Royal Spas of Europe” form a union of leading and traditional European spas and health centers: emperors, kings, nobility and famous statesmen are to be included among their many illustrious guests and for that reason, these spas have repeatedly received international acclaim. Building upon this heritage, the “Royal Spas of Europe” took on the task and formed the initiative of expanding upon the unique characteristics of the spas and their thermal springs facilities. The qualitative first-class health and cure facilities are therefore being supplemented and expanded upon through attractive arrangements with cultural and historical background. Bayreuth’s mayor, Thomas Ebersberger, accepted the membership certificate and may, effective immediately, refer to his home city as the “Royal Spa Bayreuth”. Bayreuth, with more than 74,000 inhabitants, is not only well-known for its festivals and its university, but is also the largest city in Upper Franconia, especially prized as a spa city with not only a rich heritage, but also with an ultra-modern health center that offers a wellness program second to none. Surrounded by the beautiful natural landscapes of the region known as “Franconian Switzerland” and the Fichtel Mountains, Bayreuth offers a wide range of both sporting and leisure-time activities. A multitude of modern sporting facilities and bathing possibilities, in particular the Lohengrin Thermal Springs with its state-licensed medicinal mineral water – assure our guests the highest possible health care and that special feeling of well-being.
The landscape near the thermal bath is splendid. Located nearby is the public park with an eremitage and an 18-hole golf course. The bath facilities, with its grounds generously appointed and cared for, live under the motto “Have fun staying healthy”. A comprehensive therapeutic and wellness offering – where the health-minded guest is clearly and unmistakably addressed - stands ready at your disposal.

Health center
Bayreuth offers 5 highly-qualified hospitals, which, through their cooperative efforts, guarantee the highest possible level of medical care. Performance-oriented general practitioners and specialized doctors, several medical and therapeutic medical schools, a multitude of private companies specialized in medical products, technologies and equipment, as well as first-class health service providers such as the German Social Security Office for Upper and Central Franconia complete this wide spectrum for excellent health care.

An attractive city for both your relaxation and your shopping needs
Thanks to not only the local beer specialties and the excellent Franconian and international cuisine, Bayreuth is haven to enjoyers of superb dining and wining. This offering, when combined with excellent services available in the hotels, results in many thousands of visitors and guests, from both near and far, returning to Bayreuth because they are totally convinced by the quality they find here. The retail industry in Bayreuth is especially attractive. Upper Franconia’s “Nr. 1 Shopping City” offers a wide range of selected specialty shops in the historically-rich Old Town. It’s hard to resist taking a relaxed stroll through the narrow streets – perhaps just window-shopping, perhaps more.

Unique historic attractions
The city looks back on a history of more than 400 years as a margraviate residence.
The magnificent baroque buildings of the Margrave Wilhelmine, Friedrich the Great’s favorite sister, must be included among the city’s most famous tourist attractions and should be part of every visit to the city. The margraviate Opera House should also be included in the group. It is to this day a most beautiful Baroque theater house and has been nominated for entry into the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, just as the “Neue Schloss” and the landscape park “Eremitage” with its baroque castles and fountains. Two of the most important people borne of Bayreuth’s cultural past are certainly the piano virtuoso Franz Liszt and the poet Jean Paul.

A cultural experience throughout the entire year
Bayreuth’s international reputation as a cultural capital is based above all on the idea Richard Wagner to organize a festival. More than 60,000 visitors attend the opera festival every year, as the stars of the Wagner Scene put on trend-setting performances. The Bayreuth Music Festival has elevated the city of Bayreuth to a level of international stardom, just as the singers, the conductors, the directors and the stage designers. As soon as the first chords of the fanfare of the Richard Wagner Music Festival fill the air, international visitors swarm to the “Green Hill”. The cornerstone of this facility was laid in 1872, thanks to the generous financial support offered by the Bavarian King Ludwig II. Its splendid acoustic characteristics amaze festival visitors year after year.
Museums in and around Bayreuth are not in short supply. A total of 25 establishments can be found here and their experts are called upon not only locally, but by organizations across the land and throughout Europe, to offer professional information in all matters “Wagnerian”, as well as about Liszt, Jean Paul and Freimaurer. We place a lot of importance on cultural experiences here in Bayreuth: In the summer time, the Wagner Music Festival and the Festival of Young Artists, in the spring it’s time for the Bayreuth Easter Festival, the “Musica” and the Franconian Festival Week with carefully selected guests from the Bavarian State Theater. In the fall you can enjoy the new concert series “Bayreuth Baroque” - and countless concerts are offered by private organization throughout the entire year.

The location for modern science
Bayreuth combines tradition with progress in a very elegant, though subtle manner. The city had developed over the years to become a modern business and scientific hub with a major national and even European influence. In the mid 1970’s, a university was founded here with a wide range of courses of study. The new faculty for Applied Natural Sciences has already proven itself as a supplier of important and noteworthy impulses. Investments into our own future were made in 2002, when a Competency Center for New Materials and the associated Center for Establishing Self-Employment Techniques were opened. The city of Bayreuth is now on the best path toward becoming one of the most important international locations for high technology industries, for high-quality service offerings and for trend-setting research and development facilities.
