10.000 years ago, the eastern Eifel, a low mountain range situated between Royal Spa Bad Neuenahr and Koblenz in the south of Cologne and Bonn, has been the area with the most intensive volcanism on earth. Up to 250 volcanoes erupted their igneous magma with tremendous power, sending huge volumes of rock and ash into the atmosphere and beclouded the skies in a northway direction up to Sweden. Mass of Lava mounted up to the hills and mountains of the eastern Eifel.

About 7.000 years later the Egyptians started to use mud-baths cosmetically. And about 2000 years before Romans were first using warming fango as remedy.

It was in the beginnings of the 20th century, when Count Josef Metternich in Bad Neuenahr remembered all these facts and went for search. On the outskirts of the noble Spa Bad Neuenahr that has been inaugurated by the later Empress Augusta in 1858, he discovered deposits of fango rich in minerals, derived from the age of tertiary and soared up to the earth’ s surface by blaze and pressure of volcanoes. Thus the graduated engineer deriving from a noble family out of the 12th century, took up the winning and machine processing of the fango and founded the “Eifelfangowerke Bad Neuenahr” in 1908.

The following decades, mattering years for the spas, Josef Graf von Metternich made the Eifelfango famous worldwide. As far as Japan or Canada fango from Bad Neuenahr was delivered. Millions of patients in all relevant spas in Germany and in the whole wide world were remedied with the fango from Bad Neuenahr.

“Unequalled is the fineness of the ground powder of the Bad-Neuenahr-Eifelfango, that is powdered in a ball-mill at a temperature of 300 centigrades so finely, that it flows like water.” points out Franz Joseph Graf Metternich, who has inherited the management of the business from his father Paul Joseph in 1992. “This fineness optimizes pulping of the minerals, which are very numerous and concentrated in this fango.”

The medicinal benefit of the fango for the patient is the result of three effects:
The blood circulation is ameliorated, tension and hardening is relaxed, and on top, whilst this treatment morphines are poured out by the body, leading to an excellent sense of well-being.

This very noble fango is used in Bad Neuenahr for the personal benefit of the patients for hundred years. But here, and nowhere else, the pleasant impact of Bad Neuenahr mineral water is adding up to medicinal benefit of this fine fango out of the elementary power of fire, wherewith the fango here is prepared. Warm mineral water ascending out a several hundred meters depth – renowned worldwide itself as the “Queen of Table Waters”.

Today the guests experience royal pampering from gentled natural elixirs in the “Symphony of the Senses”, a unique centre of well-being in the elegant ambiance of the costly restored spacious halls of the warm-water-bath-house the “Thermal-Badehaus Bad Neuenahr”. Here the powers of water and fire cooperate, when the warm fango is petted on the skin, and a deep sense of well-being pervades those relaxation seeking guests.
