I. Location; road, rail and air connections

Bad Neuenahr has been a spa for nearly 150 years. It is situated in the charming valley of the river Ahr, the "red wine valley"  running into the Rhine, and at the foot of the Eifel hills with their magnificent deciduous and coniferous forests. The town is only a few kilometres from the Rhine and one of its most scenic regions - the Siebengebirge - and approximately 25 kilometres from Bonn and about 40 kilometres from Cologne.

You can reach Bad Neuenahr

by car
via Autobahn A 61, exit marked Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler or Sinzig/Bad Neuenahr; or via B9 and B266 and B267.

by train
to Remagen, where the major express trains from all parts of Germany and abroad stop.  Good rail connections to the Ahr valley, Inter-City trains to Bonn or Koblenz. In Remagen there are also regular bus connections to and from Cologne, Bonn, Remagen and Bad Neuenahr.

by air
via Cologne/Bonn or Duesseldorf or Frankfurt/Main airports or Hahn airport (charter flights).

Bad Neuenahr is part of the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler (chief town of its administrative district) and has a population of approximately 28,000. There are excellent shopping facilities in the town, and there are plenty of opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Most of the townspeople are involved in tourism or in the health sector.  All disruptive industrial activity has been kept out.

II. Climate

Bad Neuenahr and its surrounding countryside are situated in the slate hills of a region called the Ahr-Eifel.  Characteristic features are low rainfall, a comparatively high rate of sunshine (160 hours per month from May to August) and a temperate climate, above all in the valley itself.

III.  Health and tourist infrastructure

Its geological features have provided the town with a number of thermal springs.  A few years after the drilling of the first Neuenahr spring in 1851, doctors recognised the healing properties of the water for diabetes mellitus, liver and bile duct problems and for cardiovascular complaints.

The town has approximately 4,800 beds (of which 1,351 are hospital beds) for patients who come to take the waters,  either as an internal or external health cure.

Accommodations are plenteous: apart from the clinics, they range from small bed-and-breakfast guesthouses and holiday apartments to exclusive hotels with commodious rooms swimming pools, international cuisine as well as a wide range of entertainment.

The complaints catered for in Bad Neuenahr are also many and varied: e.g. degenerative diseases of the spine and joints, diabetes mellitus, the whole spectrum of metabolic disorders, especially lipometabolic complaints and obesity, chronic inflammatory illnesses in the form of rheumatism, disorders affecting cardiovascular and vascular functions, disorders of the ureters such as chronic cystitis, convalescence following a serious illness or operation, and fatigue.

The treatment of these complaints includes, besides the thermal waters,  the use of Eifel mudpacks (fango packs),  together with the full range of therapeutic techniques which one would expect in a world-renowned spa.

Guests receive their treatment in the thermal baths run by the spa administration (mudpack department, thermal baths, medicinal baths, dietary consultations, massage cabins, Kneipp department, inhalation rooms) as well as in the AHR THERMEN baths (hydro gymnastics). About ten health resort physicians are on hand to take care of outpatients and prescribe the required medication.  Outpatient care is also provided by the 100 resident doctors (representing all fields of specialisation) in the town.

Besides the visitors to the spa and the baths, approximately one million tourists visit Bad Neuenahr each year.

The Ahr valley provides ideal conditions for walks and bike rides, including mountain biking.  Visitors can experience and appreciate the magnificent valley landscape via the Rotwein ("red wine") route and numerous other hiking and biking paths.

Gourmets, too, are well catered for.  Two restaurants, "Steinheuer's Alte Post" and "Brogsitter's Sanct Peter", are listed in the Michelin Guide for being among the best in Germany.  And there are many other delightful restaurants offering regional cuisine and good plain cooking.

The international flair of a renowned spa combined with the romantic atmosphere of the Ahr valley make the region a very attractive venue for companies and associations and organisers holding congresses and seminars.  Rest and relaxation are aids to concentration. Bad Neuenahr has always sought to develop its congress and seminar facilities. The hotels of the town are well equipped to cater both for smaller workshops and congresses of up to 800 delegates.

A special attraction of the town is the casino, where you can play American and French roulette or have a go at the one-arm bandits, baccarat, blackjack, bridge, or billiards. The casino has approximately a quarter of a million visitors a year. The other tourist attractions of Bad Neuenahr are medicinal walks, 300 kilometres of other walks, concerts, reading rooms,  a comprehensive programme of theatre events, social events, tea dances and evening dances, indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools and swimming baths, and numerous other sports facilities - the 14 tennis courts in Lenné Park, Köhlerhof (an 18-hole golf course), and riding facilities, as well as opportunities for excursions along the Ahr valley, to the Rhine and Moselle valleys, and to the Eifel.

For guests who wish to take part in a "wellness" programme in the thermal baths run by the spa administration, a completely new programme called the "Symphony of the Senses" has been created. It offers the customary spa treatment but also includes several new aspects such as herbal packs, healing vinegar and a "Water Symphony".  A supplementary item in the wellness programme is a beauty farm.

IV.  Sightseeing/attractions

Römervilla (Roman Villa) Museum
A unique Roman country house wonderfully preserved.  For the area north of the Alps, the degree of preservation is excellent and is comparable only to similar buildings in the Mediterranean area, e.g. Pompeii or Herculaneum.

Weisser Turm Museum
The museum of the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is housed in a tower dating from the second half of the 13th century - one of the most impressive buildings in Ahrweiler.

Kurhaus
Finished in 1905, the Kurhaus represents the link to the beginnings of Bad Neuenahr as a spa.  Built in the baroque style, it is 170m long.

Kurgarten
The overall arrangement of the Kurgarten was created in the 19th century.  The famous thermal springs which the Princess of Prussia and later German Empress has inaugurated in 1858 are located in the garden as well as a medicinal herb garden. Twice a week the geysir "Großer Sprudel" jumps up to a height of nearly 60 feet close to the Bauhaus style concert hall.

Badehaus
The large thermal Badehaus dates from 1898-99 and forms the focal point of the spa treatment.  With its construction, a new era in the life of Neuenahr began.  Whilst the impressive exterior of the Badehaus has been preserved in its original state, the interior was modernised in 1997 and given its own pleasing ambience and today it is one of the largest wellness-centres in Germany.

Cultural events
Theatre performances, concerts, ballet, authors reading from their own works, and exhibitions of the work of artists, ancient and modern are some of the cultural events.  Highlights are unquestionably the "Sommernacht der Rose" (Summer Night of the Roses) in the spa park of Bad Neuenahr,  open-air events and balls.  Supplementing these events are the local wine festivals in various parts of the town, for example the Historic Wine Festival in Heimersheim.

V.  Shopping

In keeping with its popularity as a tourist resort town and a spa, and with its regional importance as a district centre for the surrounding communities, Bad Neuenahr has abundant facilities for shopping of all kinds and in all price ranges.
Boutiques, jewellers, cosmetics and leather goods shops feature a wide variety of excellent items.

VI.  Entertainment/recreation

Bad Neuenahr offers its visitors a variegated programme of entertainment and recreation.  For the major events there are "packages" combining a hotel booking and a ticket for the event. Here are a few examples of what is on offer:

Fitness par excellence in the AHR-THERMEN
The AHR-THERMEN has excellent facilities if you want to take a get-fit holiday in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.  The AHR-THERMEN is considered one of the most beautiful spa settings in Germany.  In addition to the very spacious baths with sparkling thermal water, the AHR-THERMEN also has an outdoor pool with a grass area for sunbathing, a sauna park, solaria and massage facilities.

Sommernacht der Rose
This is one of the big annual events in the Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler calendar. At the end of June the Kurpark is transformed into a sea of colour, and this forms the backdrop to the "Summer Night of the Roses", which is celebrated together with our visitors, and which creates an absolutely entrancing atmosphere with music, dance and a firework display that lights up the sky with all the colours of the flowers in the park.  The event is also a festival of culinary attractions. Some of the top restaurants in the town and a number of wine-growers present the best from the menus and wine cellars of the Ahr valley.

VII.  Nearby attractions

Bad Neuenahr is also a handy starting point for getting acquainted with a large number of well-known German beauty spots and for attending internationally renowned events. In less than an hour's drive you can reach world-famous historical and cultural sites: the Remagen bridge, the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz (where the Moselle flows into the Rhine), the Loreley near St. Goarshausen, the world-famous vineyards of the Moselle, the Cologne cathedral.  The Nürburgring, with its national and international motor racing events, is also just "on the doorstep".  A varied programme of attractions is also offered by the larger towns and cities of the Rhine and Ruhr, situated no farther than 50 to 100 kilometres away.  Towns and cities such as Bonn, Cologne, Duesseldorf, Essen and Bochum offer a full range of events - museum visits,  major sports events such as horse-racing, cycle racing, soccer and ice hockey games; also opera, musicals, concerts, and variety shows with national and international stars. Here in the heart of Europe is flair and vitality, and entertainment for everyone's taste.
