After her love for Don José has flown, Carmen falls in love with the extremely attractive and successful Torero Escamillo. The desperate Don José wants ‘his’ Carmen back but this woman has a will of her own, she won't allow herself be owned and remains as 'free as a bird'. The tragic finale is well-known: Carmen dies at the jealous hands of the man who had apparently loved her so much. This opera has always enjoyed much acclaim in opera houses and it is still one of the most-staged operas anywhere in the world. In the past, as today, people love this masterwork and are enchanted by the wonderful music, hum along to the heart-wrenching arias – and have taken Carmen, the gypsy girl, to their hearts.
