On 19th August 1853 the official engagement of Emperor Franz-Joseph and Elisabeth of Bavaria was announced in Bad Ischl. One day after the birthday of the Emperor, who was always received with great celebrations in Ischl, there was yet another occasion to celebrate.
The engagement was announced in 10 Esplanade House, the annual summer residence of the imperial family. Today the house is the museum of the town of Bad Ischl and it is therefore quite natural that the commemorative exhibition to this event should be staged there. Paintings, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs offer a brief review of this significant historical event and of both the families. The highlights include the models of the bride’s jewels, gifts and parts of the bridal trousseau. The exhibition will be completed by two readings on the subject of the Habsburgs and Empress Elisabeth 14th August and 26th September. The renowned author and Habsburg expert, Gabriele Praschl-Bichler, will then be speaking at the exhibition.
