Hungarians are great survivors. We have already logged over 1,100 years out of which probably only two centuries were spent in independence. During the rest of the time from Huns to Mongols and Romans to Turks and Habsburgs to Soviets lots enjoyed the stay.
Yet, Budapest hoteliers, the national airline, MALEV, the Budapest Airport Authority, the Tourism Office of Budapest and the Hungarian National Tourist Office thought they’d join forces and turn it around. Imagine what an invasion it could be if this time, for a change, we would actually INVITE everyone??? Particularly since the name of the program, invasion translates into „megszállás” in Hungarian – the exact same word we use for an overnight at a hotel...So invite these modern day invaders to the sparkling sunshine and white snow of the pre-Christmas street fairs. They lure them to enjoy the over-abundance of the season’s cultural buzz – from a Vincent van Gogh opening at the centennial Museum of Fine Arts to premieres at Budapest’s famous State Opera House and the dozens of concerts, gallery openings and art shows during the Budapest Spring Festival.
Following the motto of the promotion „everyone stays longer in Budapest than planned”, the program offers a 4th night free after three nights spent and paid for at already promotional prices at any one of the 50 or so participating hotels. Accommodations range from three-star city centre tourist class hotels to the high-end five star properties.
A free day is also thrown in when you buy the three-day Budapest Card, a convenience visitor’s card offering spectacular discounts on dining, shopping, museum and gallery admissions, plus unlimited transportation on Budapest’s comprehensive public transportation network. Budapest Winter Invasion operates between December 1st, 2006 and March 31st, 2007. The program is designed for independent travellers or groups, booking online with participating hotels and Malev Hungarian Airlines or through travel agents.
Details of the program, like the list of participating hotels, an event calendar for the winter season, dining, sightseeing and transportation options, are available via the main website of the Hungarian National Tourist Office or at the purpose-built site of the winter program promotion:
