Hesse’s first national park has been established in the direct vicinity of Bad Wildungen-Reinhardshausen. In May 2004, an area of approx. 60 sq.km., was officially opened by Hesse's Prime Minister Roland Koch in person as “Kellerwald-Edersee National Park". The new national park is highly valued for its stocks of beechwood forest and is therefore called the “culmination of nature conservation” in Hesse by the nature conservation society. The natural development of the forest will have free rein over 75 percent of the national park area. The special characteristic feature, landscape beauty, the peace and tranquillity of this undisturbed area is focused on just as much as the preservation of the region's valuable cultural- and natural history features. Experts consider the development of these values to be exemplary for relaxation, recuperation and education. Tourism in the spa centre of Bad Wildungen and Reinhardshausen will profit greatly from the national park.
