| After several months of construction, the new “SaunAhr” landscape in the “Ahr Thermal Baths” was finally opened on 1 October 2005. The outdoor area was increased in size from the previous 2,000 m² to 4,000 m². A portion of the construction costs, which totaled € 1,000,000, were covered by the foundation from the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for Economy Affairs, Transportation, Agriculture and Vineyards. The SaunAhr area, embedded nicely into the relaxation area, includes three new saunas, an outdoor pool with hot spring water and an oasis for relaxing. General Manager Rainer Mertel welcomed guests from the areas of politics, administration and business to the opening ceremonies. After a few words of welcome to the gathered guests, he let the numbers speak for themselves. He led the guests on a guided-tour of the new facilities in the SaunAhr Landscape and briefly described the benefits of the new facilities. The “Ahr Thermal Baths” are visited by more than 300,000 bathers every year and are therefore one on the largest attractions of its kind for bathing and wellness in the entire region and beyond. As a result, very high standards for applied not only for the existing areas, but also for the newly constructed indoor and outdoor facilities. The new sauna area, for example, was made from Kelo-wood. These Scots pine trees come from the forested polar regions where the trees are not normally harvested. The trees died of natural causes long ago, but remained standing upright. For around 100 years the dead trees were subjected to hostile climatic conditions, including snow, ice, frost and wind. These elements caused the trees to be naturally preserved and it was possible, without any additional handling, to use this silvery wood as a valuable raw material for the building of the saunas. Three different block house saunas were made in Bad Neuenahr from the Kelo-wood from Finland: the Event-Sauna (203° F), the Gallery-Sauna (194° F) and the Aroma-Sauna (176° F). This interesting combination of modern technology and traditional, natural building materials can be observed from the floors to the roofs, which incidentally have been planted with bushes, plants and grass and are therefore totally and harmoniously integrated into the surroundings. It’s almost like you are entering an Indian steam room! The operators, in keeping with these traditions, have developed the “ceremonies”, which offer the sauna visitors more than just the opportunity of benefiting from the extensive perspiration. There are ceremonies where sea water is poured over the hot stones, sometimes scented with tropical fruits, or with special Finish mixtures and concoctions. Various types of exercises, intended to help our guests relax, were also demonstrated out on the lawn and in the pool. Fango treatments and massages sessions are also offered. These ceremonies last between one and several hours and add a good measure of exotic content to the idea of Vacation at the Ahr Thermal Bath. Aside from the new sauna facilities, there is also a new outdoor area with heated walkways and a 24 m² outdoor pool. Here you can enjoy the water from the Bad Neuenahr hot springs. Just jump in! The water is a pleasant 79° F the year around. An additional building, the “Relaxation Oasis”, houses not only the toilet facilities but also features an extensive quiet room. Here, as our guest, you can relax on comfortable recliners and look out into the natural surroundings through a large panel window - or simply close your eyes and enjoy a short, well-deserved nap.
