The 2000 year old bathing town with special flair is set along the narrow valley of the river Oos at the foot of Black Forest. Healing thermal waters gush daily out of 12 springs that flow directly into, amongst others, the Caracalla-Thermal Bath and the “Roman-Irish Bad”. Roman Emperors already used these hot springs. Today, they are attracing visitors from around the world. The famous Casino at the “Kurhaus”, the International racecourse and the shopping mile of the Old Town are just some of the Baden-Baden highlights that stand for the town’s exclusivity. Once again, throughout the summer of 2006, there is an attractive and content rich arts and culture offer for example at the “Festspielhaus” and the “Art Museum Frieder Burda”. Take a break and enjoy pure relaxation in Baden-Baden.
In the centre of attention of the yearly Herbert von Karajan Whitsun Festival (June 2–7) at the Festspielhaus, Europe’s second largest opera hall, are piano concerts of Hélène Grimaud and Martha Argerich as well as Wagner’s “Lohengrin” with Kent Nagano.
The month of July is characterized by Open-Air-concerts and idyllic village fairs. The start marks the "Riesenwiesenfest" at the "Klosterwiese" (July 2). In the evening Chris Barber & Friends will swing through 50 years of Jazz in the "Kurhaus garden".
When the village Steinbach in the "Rebland" will celebrate its mediaeval wine-growing-days, and in all streets and courtyards ancient crafts will be presented, you will feel put back by centuries – and this is not only reason of the delicious wine which is planted and pressed in this region for a very long time already.
The week-long 50-years-celebrations of the German-French Association will start with a great opening festival on July 14.
Valery Gergiev will be granted the “Herbert von Karajan-Music Price 2006” at the Festspielhaus on July 12, and the honorific speech will be held by the cheered Salzburg “Traviata” Anna Netrebko. Afterwards the Marijnsky-Theatre around Gergiev will show within the Summer Festival their staging of “Ring of the Nibelung Trial” with archaic stage settings, fantastic costumes and great Russian voices (July 13-18). And who else still wants to see more of Wagner’s opus, should not miss his great love drama “Tristan and Isolde” on July 19.
Twinkling chrome and high-polished cars – at the 30th International Oldtimer-Meeting on July 15th and 16th can be seen more than 300 automobiles of 9 centuries in the magnificent scenery of the "Lichtentaler Allee" and the "Kurgarten". In the evening the park turns into an illuminated magical garden – nostalgic dreams from past times.
From July 21st to 23rd, the “Baden-Baden Summer Nights” attract with culinary delicacies, world music and wild Rock’n’Roll, water fountains and romantic light cascades on the romantic course between "Trinkhalle" and “Kurhaus”.
The "Art Museum Frieder Burda" shows from July 7th to October 29th an exhibition with about 100 masterpieces by Marc Chagall - full of poetry and enchantment and collected from Russian and French Museums as well as European private collections. This exhibition will be unique in Germany.
During the “Great Festival Week” at the International Racecourse from August 25th to September 3rd can be seen just as every year the most expensive horses, the most beautiful women, the craziest hats und lots of blue-blooded nobilities. In town, there will also be outstanding live-bands und the „culinary mile“ with delicacies of cuisines and wine cellars of the Baden and Alsatian region at the “Kurpark-Meeting”. The festive end marks the “Grand Prix-Ball” at the “Kurhaus” – elegant ambience for horse breeders, princes, stars and starlets – dancing into the early morning.
This summer, Baden-Baden looks especially forward to welcoming numerous guests from Great Britain, as the English National Football Team will have its quarters at Schlosshotel Bühlerhöhe during the World championship. Also, the players’ women will enjoy Beauty- and Wellness offers, stroll through boutiques and museums in the very special summer of Baden-Baden with southern atmosphere.
