| Iffezheim Race Week – it’s the epitome of flat-racing and glamour, exciting thor-oughbreds and society beauties, fun and suspense right up to the finish line, a busy funfair and a champagne party all rolled into one. The Spring Meeting (late May/early June) and the Grand Race Week (late August to early September) are looked upon as the social highlights of the year. With lots of fun to appeal to everyone. When the four-legged stars gallop towards the finish line with flying hoofs nobody can bear to stay in their seat: as if by magic, the usually somewhat stiff and formal rulers of coffee dynasties, the moustachioed potentates from a thousand and one nights, the long-legged graces in mini-skirts and the smart yuppie millionaires all join ranks and get to their feet to noisily cheer on their fa-vourite. The world’s most expensive thoroughbreds with top-ranking international jockeys in the saddle are competing for prizes and bonuses that can run into millions. The Grosser Preis von Baden features among the top 14 races in the illustrious “World Series Racing Championship”. But you don’t need to be a seriously rich oil sheik to place your bets and make even more money. “Many a mickle makes a muckle” as the saying goes, and of course it was at Baden-Baden that the high-est winnings in the history of German turf were paid out: the return on a three-way bet for just 2 marks 50 was the tidy sum of 126,639 marks! Even the most beautiful of our media stars will insist on showing their face at this social occasion: what, after all, Iffezheim wouldn’t be what it is without the likes of TV beauty Alexandra Kamp or super playmate Gitta Saxx, without Verona Feldbusch, the advertising commercial icon of spinach fame, or the never-ending stream of long-legged albeit nameless beauties from the international beauty contest scene. |
